This was posted up on the pedigreedatabase site My friend Renee sent this to me, please help if you can! Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2003 07:36:13 -0600 Subject: German Shepherd Crisis From: Elizabeth Riddle Dear Renee, This is Beth Riddle writing regarding a very serious atrocity that has occurred in our state and in our little German Shepherd community. A mentally ill woman was served a warrant on Dec 16th and Dec 17th regarding the removal of animals from her property. The first wave consisted of about 90 dogs and over 70 of them were purebred GSD's. Last night at 11pm I received a phone call from my colleague that had just finished cataloging the final pull from the womans house. 160 young GSD's , nursing mothers, pups, and just a small handful were other breeds. The GSD community is shocked. I am crying and shaking as I write you, because we worked so hard yesterday to pull just the first 22 out of the shelter and get them into rescue. Then as we were going to bed feeling pretty good, I received this phone call. The holidays make finding kennel space impossible. We are begging, we never beg, but we are on our knees to former adopters, contributors, anyone who loves German Shepherds to please help this huge rescue effort. The shelter cannot coordinate the rescues, so it is a team effort consists of Northern IL GSD Rescue, their founder and President is logging and cataloging the dogs, Chicagoland GSD Rescue is digging up a couple spaces and on the phone, Central Illinois GSD Rescue is contacting nationally and coordinating transport, foster care, and will also be pulling some of these angels. They are everywhere at the shelter. They are in cages, kennels, tied to the walls, and though they were eating dirt, had no food, are close to starvation, they just look at us and wag their tails. It is absolutely killing us to see this. We could use money for medical care, we could use puppy canned food and puppy dry food, puppy pan to feed them in, crates, kennels and most of all space! Anyone with a farm that could serve as a temporary M*A*S*H unit, or shelter. I stress there is no where to go with these kids. Transporters for national distribution. I can't even think. IF you want to help, please call at 217-337-5832 or 217-377-7135 and we'll figure something out. Thank you for your consideration. I find it very interesting that so few on a GSD list are responding to the confiscation of 160 PURE BRED GSD's in the Chicago area. The all-breed internet lists are bustling with owners of OTHER breeds organizing donations and efforts to locate foster homes. Why are so few on this list and the 2 other GSD lists I read so unconcerned? Why don't those of you who seem to know one another so well get something moving to send some money to the rescue in the name of the "German Shepherd World Discussion Board"? Isn't that more of a priority than some of the other messages I've read today? Shame on you!! Blitzen

Actually there are GSD rescue groups working on this. I am going to be helping and I know of a couple other groups that are helping. If anyone is New England would like to help North Star GSD Rescue...here is a copy of an e-mail from the head of the group I work with: Hi All, There has been a major impound of dogs belonging to a collector/breeder in Illinois. They currently have 29 GSD pups approx 6 months old and are bringing in 60 more!!! It is said that some of these 60 are Malinois that will be covered by Mal rescue. All of the GSD rescues are being contacted to help these pups. GSD Rescue of Northern Illinois is coordinating the effort. They are vetting and temp testing them before putting them into foster care. Many of us east of IL are trying to help by taking in as many as possible. At this point it seems that it will be after the Holidays that they will be moving out into rescue. In order for us to help I need to ask all of you for help with fostering and/or spreading the word to bring in more foster homes and any other ideas you may have. Puppies do tend to place quickly provided there are no health issues. There is a thread with more info on www.germanshepherds.com www.germanshepherds.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=69;t=001140;p=1#000022Thanks Steve Stephen W Plouff Roxanna V Knight-Plouff, DVM North Star German Shepherd Dog Rescue, Inc. northstargsdr@earthlink.net www.northstargsdr.org

Blitzen This is certainly a topic on email lists I belong to and there are many efforts being made. That doesn't mean EVERY BB and list has to talk about that.

How do you know what the members of this board are actually doing, rather than just jacking their jaws. What have you done to help, other than to insult your betters?

I had made a website about it feel free to visit by going to www.freewebs.com/gewitterstarke/Rescues.htmBlitzen123, I am concern and that is the reason why i had made a rescue page onto my website. I wish tI had the money in the world, much richer then bill gates but all the money I have is for my dogs vet bills. I wish i could donate money but again the money that I have are jakes vet bills. PS, Im sure that the humane society could spare some money to help out theses GSD Rescues, from what i heard they have billions of dollars. Currmudgeon made a point there...What have you done to help theses GSD's Blitzen?

I've send my donation.
Sorry if it sounded as if I was trying to dictate what any of you could discuss, I was simply trying to raise some attention to this horrible situation. It seems that there are more people with other breeds involved than are those of us with GSD's. We are reputed to be a breed that only cares about show wins and titles, I hope we will continue to prove those doubters wrong and step up to the plate and do the right thing for these poor animals.
My only intent was to get some help for 160 cruelty cases, not to cause a fight on this board or to insult anyone. Very sorry.
Blitzen

There are rescues from just about each state working on this. I happen to be waiting to foster one of these pups. There is alot more being discussed about this on other GS boards.

Blitzen, as a newer member to this board, and perhaps others, you may not realise that most of us in here ARE involved in Rescue work of our beloved breed. We all do our little bit in our own local area - in my case I am unable to physically help, but make donations of dog food, blankets and cash to our local shelter. I also do door to door collections once a year. OK, its a sad story - but remember that 160 is a drop in the ocean worldwide, and much worse is happening to other dogs. I will not accept a 'Shame on me', nor will many other members of this board!! Shame on YOU !!! John Modified later: Sorry Guys!!! I saw this one in the 'Read Last Ten Messages' and was so incensed that I typed in the above message without reading the other replies above until after it was posted. J

I've already apologized for hurting anyone's feeling with my original post. What else can I say? I was hoping someone on this board would organize an effort to gather donations, etc in the name of the board. That was my only agenda. Again, I AM SORRY. I won't be posting anymore.

I've already apologized for hurting anyone's feeling with my original post. This isn't about you. The message wasn't directed to you. If you wish to start a fund raising effort, instead of whining that no one is doing anything, then do so. But before you post anything soliciting funds, you must obtain permission from the Admins, who will check out your proposal before letting you proceed here. We've seen too many scams on other venues to allow unverified fund solicitations.
