At what age does a puppy usually discover that he can lift a hind leg while peeing? My Clarence is not the full ticket and at 18 months still stands square; I don't expect him to "grow up" due to his brain damage. However, young Jack, who is now 15 weeks old (almost!) lifted a hind leg while peeing today stood in the middle of the garden. Bearing in mind he has never seen another dog lift his leg I found this fascinating, (well, up to a point) and wondered if it was a subject worthy of discussion... my feeble brain at this time of year.. forgive me!!
Happy New Year to all!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

Sounds like you have an early bloomer on your hands!
Most males, as far as I know, don't really lift their legs until they're shown by an older male dog that this is how it's done OR they become active stud males and develop the urge to mark their territory.

My pups start at 10 months, (without instruction from older dog). My current pup started at 9 1/2 months. Just in the middle of the yard. Not on a tree or anything, yet. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE.

It all depends on the dog.
When my Airedale was old and about ready to check out, he spent an entire day taking a very young (9 mo) Monty and an even younger (8 mo) Jib to every fence post on the place and taught them to lift their legs. By the end of the lesson they were lifting their legs on everything! Christopher was so proud of himself for the lesson well taught and died shortly thereafter, knowing the fence posts would continue to be well marked. (have coyotes all ovver the place so this was very important to Chris)
Most of the boys seem to do it somewhere about a year. Gordy has been lifting a leg since he was about 4 months, but it is not related to marking anything - he just stands in the middle of the yard and pees while lifting one leg.
We had a friend with a 3 months old Chihuahua that did serious marking - lifting that leg so high he almost fell over. Talk about attitude!

I also have a 3 month old male who has never been taught how to lift a leg by an older male.He will also stand in the middle of the yard and lift one leg.The first time I noticed him doing this,I was so excited for him,I was telling everybody about how smart my little man was.I have since come to realize he is doing this just so he doesn't have to step in the spot running towards his leg.
