:'(About a week ago, I went out to feed my German Shepherd and noticed a thick milky color covering the surface of her right eye. My husband took her to the vet which sent her home with Prednisone oral tabs. The vet said if that didn't clear her eye up that we would then consider seeing an opthalmologist. She didn't perform any tests other than an eye stain and a routine exam. My mother-in-law felt we needed a second opinion, so she took the dog to her vet. He stated that witht he prednisone, her white blood cell count would be elevated and therefore he could not tell if it was elevated due to infection in the eye or the prednisone, so he took her off it and replaced it with Prednisolone eye drops, ophthalmic triple antibiotic ointment, 200 mg. ketoconazole 2x daily, 100 mg rimadyl for pain 3x daily. She hurt very bad when the drops were inserted into her eye. After a few days, her eye began to lose the milky white appearance and now looks like a very thin transparent film covers her pupil. She returned to the vet two days ago, he said to discontinue the drops because she is fighting us now to get them in and to keep giving her the ointment. He also said he is still somewhat concerned that she still has swelling above her eye and it's putting pressure on her eye causing her pain. He ruled out fungus through blood tests, but is still unsure if it is infection/trauma because he told me to continue the meds for 1 week and to bring her back. Then, we will have to decide to either go to an ophthalmologist in OH or TN, we live in KY, or put her down. I can't understand how a tumor or glaucoma, any of the things it could be that are serious and would require surgery, could just crop up overnight. The vet has given her a histo/blasto, 1 heska cbc/diff and a schioetz tonometer test to gauge the pressure behind her eye. I have read a little about Pannus, Glaucoma, and Cataracts. If it were to be any of the three, her eye looks like a cataract, but to my knowledge, that couldn't have formed overnight. Does anyone know of anyone else that has had this happen to their dog. I know eye problems can manifest from trauma, inflammation, tumors and hereditary conditions. She goes back to the vet in a few days and I am not ready to make any decision until I am certain of what she has. She has no loss of appetite or anything. Other than when she bumps into something or you touch above or right on her eye, she doesn't exhibit any pain, she is the same playful dog she has always been. If anyone has any opinions/suggestions please reply as soon as possible because I have spent $250 on my dog and can't afford to spend more. Also, if anyone knows of any clinical trials she could participate in, I would be willing to consider that as an option if she needs more treatment. Thank you for your time and concern.
