Hi Nightshadow Next thing you need if you are going to show a dog is a Judges book. What is a judges book? Go to the newsagency, bookstore or Kmart (Janis, sorry I really am stuck here for your equivilent). By a book A5 with A-Z marked down the sides. (Possibly called an index book) You take it to shows with you or put it somewhere where it will not get lost. In it you put the judges name (in alphabetical order) then the show, if you showed under that judge position you came, how many in class, what the judge liked and disliked. If you didn't enter but watched were there dogs you knew and how were they place. If you didn't enter would you give that judge an entry in future. This way you build up your knowledge of whether it is worth wasting money by going to a particular show under this judge or not. Also if you don't get to a show you can see if the animals that the judge put up at that show were still the same type and you can make your own decisions on some of the dogs placed. (Do not let anyone near this book I had mine stolen a few years ago, because I won't let people have a look and they would go to shows and find that I had not entered) Lots of people have little things that they do to give them the edge. I don't condone cheating in anyway shape or form . Hard work and strategy are the best ways to go particularly if you want to show the dog you have and try to achieve yourself. That to me is the more fun way. Regards Freundhund

Hi Freundhund
More excellent ideas. I buy a show catalog and do the same thing, I always planned to then move my comments on the Judge into a Judges book.
Thank you again for more great ideas. Keep them coming.

I had no idea about this judges book, LOL I haven't even thought of that before! that is a wonderful idea to do. This includes trial judges, so that you can prepare for certain things that a certain schutzhund judges are wanting to expect from your dogs

Hi Brittany Yes, I have a trials book as well for listing comments. In my case because I can only compete in obedience trials, I also have to list whether the judge likes GSD's. Over here you get judges in the obedience ring who wil prefer another breed and you will not get marked as high. Also judges that are just not keen on GSD's an handle the dogs quite ruffly in stands. If you are going into obedience under the judges name put what class they judged ie Novice (CD) Open (CDX) and draw the heeling pattern they use. After a while you will notice the judges tend to stick within certain patterns within their judging, leaving you to be able to practise a basic pattern for that judge the week before entering under them. (It helps) Again for Schutzenhund you will find that the Judge likes the helper in a particular hide , and frequently where the want the helper to turn from etc. All notes help in your preparation for competition. Brittany Some of the comments about some of the judges ould get me sued. ie Like stupid old codger can't tell the back end of the dog from the front. Or great judge excellent taste always give an entry to. I wonder how much they bribed the judge. It's stuff you wouldn't let your best friend see. Then there is cfomments on how difficult the judge is in obedience. Like hasn't ever trained a dog his wife trained the dog/ or visa versa. Wonderful judge can ignore those little lags when they lose concentration because some idiot is throwing a ball for their dog outside the ring. Sorry Brittany everyone also has a different opinion of each Judge. You have to do it to your taste in Judges. Regards Freundhund

;)The "judges book" must be an Aussie thing...Mine never leaves home..it's a Black Book..I have several little codes that may not be appreciated by the viewing public ::)I started to keep it on the puter..but will not do that again..when it crashed.. just as well it was hand written...YES the JUDGES BOOK is a must..saves you making the same mistakes twice..and svaes on entry fees and petrol.. Di
The heel pattern thing is a great idea too..when I was judging obedience it sometimes became obvious that handlers had been practicing my pattern and started to anticipate..so I'd throw in an extra turn just to test them...so be careful of that anticipation..
