Since I just posted in another thread I thought I should stop in here an introduce myself. I recognize quite a few names so hopefully some of you will remember me too.
As you can see in my sig, Cassidy is 3-1/2 years old, and my second GSD. My husband has had them his whole life, but I was a cat girl. Still love the fuzzy little creatures. ;D He brought me home a kitten when we got engaged, so I got him a dog as a wedding gift. Sneaker was an awesome dog, the first dog I had owned as an adult, and trained myself. She sold me on dogs in general and German Shepherds in particular with her intelligence and the strong bond she formed with us. When she left us it took all of a week for us to get Cassidy. Couldn't stand the quiet empty house.
Cassidy was a force of nature. We were totally unprepared for her energy and spirit. I couldn't teach her fast enough, she was always a step ahead of me. Loves to swim, obsessed with balls, a natural tracker, and happy, happy, happy. I had high hopes of dong somethin fun with her like agility or flyball, but then a year ago disaster struck. She started having pain while getting up off the floor and the vet thought it must be a musculo-skeletal problem since he couldn't find anything wrong with her. We took her to a neurologist, he did an MRI, and diagnosed her with discospondylitis, a serious spinal problem. We've tried all the natural remedies and supplements, and she is seeing a holistic vet for acupunture treatments, but it now looks like she will need to be on NSAIDs for the rest of her life. She is responding well to Metacam which she's been on since the beginning of January. She'll always be very physically limited, but she has that spark back in her eyes, and is much more playful.
She ended up not being the dog I thought she would be but we love her dearly, and will try to keep her as happy and active as she can be for as long as we can. She's our baby.
