Very interesting article. I have State Farm and they no longer ask what breed of dog you have, just if you have a dog. They will cover you in an unprovoked attack HOWEVER, they will cancel you if you do not get rid of the dog immediately. (My mom works for State Farm and I made sure of this when I got Gunnar-also since we are moving soon, I wanted to make sure they weren't going to ding me on the dog issue when I transfer my homeowners policy to the new house)

I think the prudent thing would be to discus it with your agent. Responses by insurers vary a lot. We have had excellent support from American Family Insurance.

I confess, it is a concern for me in contemplating teaching Evandar protection work for a SchH title. I can only imagine what the insurance companies will do when they figure out that some dogs are actually trained to bite. The first concern for me was the last time I had Hattie re-evaluated for Pet Therapy work. The first thing out of the Delta Society Evaluator's mouth was: "Is she bite trained?" simply because she was a German Shepherd. Right or wrong, their new policy within the last 2 years is that bite trained dogs cannot even evaluate for pet therapy work. Even if they have been previously certified, they will not be allowed to re-cert. Yes, there are other pet therapy organizations that will allow bite trained dogs to evaluate...but how long will it before they jump on the bandwagon as well? I just think that it is important to consider all the angles - insurance companies, pet therapy organizations, etc - when we own GSDs or consider training them for protection. I, for one am very sad about that, considering many of our national heros - bomb detection dogs, Military Working Dogs, Border Patrol dogs, Search and Rescue dogs (9/11), Seeing Eye dogs, etc. - that have been honored by our country especially during the past few years just happen to be German Shepherds. I may be very breed prejudice, but without the German Shepherd, I think I can probably safely say that our Nation's security would be at risk. I expect that there will be lots of controversy surrounding this during the next few years to come. Fran

Dennis! That is awesome! Maybe we should all approach our insurance companies and suggest that! ;D
It would be interesting to see how many MORE times a GSD has SAVED an insurance co. money by PREVENTING a burglery, rape or thwarting off a drug deal, etc.!! I'd love to see a study producing reliable statistics about THAT! ;D
