I just acquired a well-bred German show line female from a friend who has kept her in a very nice indoor-outdoor kennel. She is obedience trained to a tee and does the automatic sit whenever you stop for even half a second. However, she is now a house pup and for the first couple of days here, she would not go the bathroom outside on the grass because she had only played and trained on grass in her previous home. All poty needs were doen on concrete. I finally got her to go on the grass, but when it rains I take my boys outside on lead to poty so as to keep my yard untrampled and keep them clean. Because of her obedience, she will not stop sitting long enough to go, and when I get her standing, she just looks at me. She will sniff a little but no poty. She has even been to the very place BOTH my boys just went, and still nothing. How do I get her to go on leach? I have been told that I need to teach her to go on command, but I don't know how to teach that. She is crate trained and house broken that is not the problem. And now that she is in heat, it is even more important to keep her close by on a leash when I let her outside. Does anyone have any suggestions? She is one year old as of January 21, 2004. Thanks, gsdpal2

Until spring when she has more time to adjust to outside, I would let her use the concrete, just keep the pooper scooper handy. It's all about HER settling in and settling down and doesn't happen overnight. Believe me.

Janis, Thanks so much for your reply. My problem is not that she will not potty on the grass anymore. We passed that stage. She will not go potty on lead. When it rains, I like them to go on lead so they stay as clean as possible and don't trample my fragile grass. I know, that is the chance you take when you are owned by a GSD lol. Her obedience just gets in the way! She is too obedient with the auto. sit. What to do...a dog that is TOO well-behaved... if only we all had this problem, huuh!

I've had dogs that "refused" to go on leash. All I could do was "wait them out". They have to go SOMETIME.<grin>

Lexi is somewhat the same way. She will go on the grass if she must. But... If she is in the yard playing, I leave the kennel door open. If she feels the urge, she will go in her kennel, go potty, and then come back out to play again.
If your driveway is concrete, maybe let her potty there?
