A great loss to the entire animal community in the Midwest recently was the loss of Bob Herd, animal reproduction specialist.
Bob worked extensively with zoos and the largest animal breeders in the US, univeristies and of course, the canine community. Almost every cover dog from Dog Fancy and Dog World had been through Bob's reproductive programme during the last 20 years.
Although I've been rather ribald (and disrespectful!) talking about Bob's work, I was always aware that Bob was great at what he did and many people who were losing hope that their animal could reproduce found success with Bob's efforts.
He will be greatly missed.

Brittany, it's amazing as you get more and more into the animal world, the people you meet and the things you learn.<laughing>
On Bob's "brag wall" were covers from many magazines (including one featuring my stubborn old Sheila's father!) and photos of animals that he helped with the reproduction. Everything from Brahma Bulls to Tigers to domestic cats. Bob was greatly in demand with zoos, equine and bovine producers and universities all around the United States. The man also owned the oldest working ultrasound machine I've ever seen!
Bob's work area was a small, dingy room off his house and it shared space with his freezing equipment for semen. Seating acommodation was a couch with no springs and the hardest chair ever invented by a human.
The first experience I had with Bob was when we bred Sheila to Kimbo. At the time I didn't know Danny or Bob and arrived not knowing what the heck was going to happen. Danny sat on the couch, I sat on the chair and we placed Sheila across Danny's lap with her head butted in my chest.
Bob did his thing, the dogs tied, dog hair flying all over the hot, airless room. Then Kimbo slid off Sheila and because he was so long in the body, he turned to face her and started nuzzling into her ears and face, licking her and mooing at her. She firmly pushed into me moaning and bitching the entire time. So, for 45 minutes, I was three inches away from a total stranger's face, with two dogs pushing me around. What do you say? "How bout dem Cubs!" <laughing>
I think I would have dealt with it better if Kimbo hadn't enjoyed himself quite so much and decided to ejaculate again and we were there for ANOTHER 30 minutes after that. I was never so glad to get out of anyplace in my life!!!
But of course, Bob helped produce several beautiful litters for us and I will miss him. So will many others.
