I hope posting this here is acceptable BUT on Sunday my 17 yr old son handle for the first time. Owner of the dog was hoping for a grading only. My son was called in towards back of the class and managed to move the bitch up a couple of places. (Owners interpreted that he did the work.) (Mother says bitch was well trained). But son got in the ring and handled. Couldn't tell you who won the class can only say outside the ring all I could do is say look, look my son's in 6th place. I think most of the other owners must have wondered what was going on. Regards Freundhund

Thats great news!! Thanks for sharing! My son is 8 years old, and he cannot compete in Junior showmanship until he's 10. But we bought him a Jack Russell Terrier puppy, to learn on. He's very excited!

Yayyyy!!!! Of course that belongs here! Isn't it great when we see our children preparing to "follow on"? Of course, mine expect to be paid to do it That's wonderful and moving up places is DEFINITELY due to the handler's work! He presented the dog in a way that made the judge revise the original opinion about where the dog should place. Yeeee haw!!!! JanisN

I too can imagine the immense pride you have, in that your son is interested enough in your hobby that he wants to share, and better still, participate.
Sadly, in Oz you don't have Pro handlers, but here in UK, young and fit people are in great demand by Old Codgers like myself, as we just can't run around the ring - 'Take them around once more, please!!' - (Huff-Puff-Phew!!!) - and they get paid very handsomely, about 80 of your Ozzie Dollars per Class!!
Pack his bags for him, and send him over here once he has learned his art, as there are a good few so called 'Pro's' that I wouldn't even let take my dogs for a Sunday stroll in the park !!!
Lovely Bragg!!!
Kind regards,
John

Oh, Freundhund, it is SO wonderful that your son moved up two places with the bitch, and that he takes an interest in your sport! He'll become more intuitive as he goes along, I'm certain. You must be very proud of him for giving it his best shot! ;D My 10 year old niece wants to learn to handle dogs, but has yet to be offered a job, even though she's been available. She's a BLAST to be with, and CAN RUN!! She once announced that she wanted to be a ballerina on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and a veterinarian on Tuesdays and Thursdays (weekends off, naturally). Now, she wants to be a full time veterinarian when she grows up.

Hi Kerry We could have a match made in heaven. My 13yr old son wants to be a veterinarian as well but it has been his only choice since the age of 2. As long as your niece doesn't mind blue eyed, blonde head cute looking guy's whose mother play's Carly Simons "Your'e so Vain" around him half the time as it suits him. No his big brother is pretty good about helping with the dogs. Regards Freundhund

I may never have children because I rather have dogs to inspire my life but again this is now and later I may want to have kids and I would love to have my child getting into the sport because it's such a great time to be there and to compete. Congratulations to your son Freundhund Jezzi, Isn't the Jack Russell Terriers named something else in the AKC? Sorry for the off topic but what was the whole point of renaming a BREED?

Congratulations. I love to see young people in the ring handling. At one of the GSD shows last year at the lunch break they had a special class for kiddies to handle. Some of the kiddes were as young as 5 and they handled puppies. They all got a 1st place rosette and some chocolate. It was wonderful to see.

How exciting! I watched my daughter compete in 4-H and AKC for 10 years. She started 4-H with our little corgi/sheltie mix, Lucy when she was 9 and Lucy was 4. My heart was always in my throat and tears in my eyes everytime it was over! She and Lucy won over 16 Grand and Reserve Grands in 4-H. Then she showed our rescued GSD, Hattie in AKC for 2 years! All I can tell you is that I thought she was the most incredible kid! Never knew how other kids did either! She is 23 now and do you think I can get her to handle my dogs? Sure wish she would! Congrats and keep that boy going!!! Fran

Freundhund- great job and congratulations to your son! What an accomplishment!
Brittany, you're right, the Jack Russell Terrier was renamed the Parson Russell Terrier in April of this past year. What IS up with that??
