:-/I am really at my wits end on this!
My female GSD begin picking at her eye about a year ago. She got it to the point that the top of her eyelid was pretty raw and I took her to my vet who stitched it up.
I have 2 GSD's and I feed them high quality food, Canidae, so I'm not sure if it was a food allergy or not. My male has never had this sort of problem.
The eye healed but then about a month after she begin picking on it even more. Now it has become this horrible raw wound above and below her eye. My vet says it would be a waste to operate and stitch again because she will obviously tear it open once more. Thinking it could be some sort of allergy I have since switched foods (all extremely high quality foods, that are specialty foods not found in chain stores). Nothing seems to help.
I feel she is now at that point where it is just a habit for her to pick on her eye. If it even gets remotely to where it looks like it is healing she just starts itching it raw again. The weird thing is, it is only her one eye and she used to have alot of infections in that eye.
I am at my wits end! My vet doesn't have a clue, maybe wants to do a biopsy and put her on steroids. She is such a beautiful dog and I almost feel like she is just self-mutilating herself but I know there obviously is a medical reason for this. Anybody else that has had this problem or any suggestions would be very much appreciated. I hate to see her suffer like this...the area around her eye is so raw and it is obviously extremely painful. This problem really needs to be taken care of but I'm not sure what any vet could do to solve it.
