Of course holidays are for nothing better than trips to the Emergency Vet! Freya started yawning half way and then squealing in pain yesterday, and was feeling very sensitive about her head area, so off to the vet we went. After a very thorough inspection, the vet ruled that she's got tonsilitis. We're on antibiotics for two weeks, but I'm wondering if anyone has any kind of home remedies to make her feel better until the meds kick in?!

Wow, Nicole, I have NEVER heard of that in a canine! And you can't get her to gargle warm, salty water, can you?
I would give baby aspirin or enteric coated aspirin for the fever and pain and let her sleep it off. Plenty of fluids, etc.
Poor Freya!!!

Hi Nicole,
I've no suggestions for home remedies and I do hope that Freya is feeling better real soon. The exact same thing happened to my Hattie last year.
She started yawning and screamed anytime she tried to eat, also she kept on stretching her neck. I was a nervous wreck, took her to the vet immediately and had her x-rayed, examined, you name it.
Couldn't believe when the vet told me she had tonsilitis. I was so relieved as I had myself convinced she was dying! She recovered very quickly so fingers crossed that Freya will do the same.

Nicole, I can't help but wonder if a teasthingy or so of honey might help to soothe Freya's tender tonsils & throat? I gave Coug honey when he had kennel cough, and it really seemed to help. He licked it right off the sthingy. Poor thing! I hope she's on the mend soon. edit note: um, I keep trying to type t e a s p o o n (no spaces) in the first line and the system keeps showing "teasthingy" anyone know why?

Glad to report that despite the tantrum she threw at not being able to go to class tonight, Freya seems to be on the mend. Liz, I had similar thoughts and have been making little yogurt pops for her. I feel so bad, I even went out and bought her a box of Frosty Paws. She sits there with her ears thingyed out to the side, and her eyes squeezed shut like she's a nursing pup and just licks and licks. Fortunately we're up to a 3/4 yawn now without a whole lot of discomfort. I think my sweet girl may be on the road to recovery! Doesn't mean I'm still not watching over her like a hawk though.
