Anyone have experience with minor staph infections?
I noticed a dark scabby area on Cougar’s paw, about the size of a dime – although it didn’t seem to be causing the dog a lot of grief. He also had 2 small scabs on one of his testicles…….when the vet checked him out, he said it looks like a staph infection (both sites) – and stated that the immune system of even 1 year old dogs is not completely up to speed yet, and that the common staph bacteria can cause a little problem like this if there is a small cut or scrape for the bacteria to enter the skin. Cougar is now on a short course of antibiotics, which seems to be helping already.
BTW – for your BARFers out there, Cougar’s vet said he looks GREAT! (he’s never been 100% supportive of the diet, but he likes what he sees in Cougar). I am also giving Cougar more yogurt right now since he's on the antibiotics.

Hi there, Yes, my GSD had a similar problem on his belly and testicles. Lucky me, at the time I worked for a Vet. When I 1st started treatment, I gave meds., but then realized that sometimes there is other methods of treatment other than popping pills down my dogs throat. So, I decided to bathe him in a Vet. perscribed shampoo that kills bacteria and used extra strength gold bond powder on the infected areas. His scabbed areas cleared up in no time. You may see me on this board recommending gold bond powder as a methond of treatment. My boy had a bad case of this and my treatment worked. That's all I can say about that. Adkins

thank you! the scabs on the "back side" are completely gone now, and the one on his foot looks SO much better. The hair is even growing back already. I think we caught this infection early, thank goodness. I will remember your advice, however, should I ever have to deal with this again.
