Just back from the vet, and I know that Andi and maybe Fran will be interested.
A little background... our senior, Sheila, of working German lines is 9.5 and has ALWAYS been a stubborn, bossy, dominant dog. This is the one who dislocated my shoulder while we were training for our CD and gave me a permanent case of tendonitis. The day she turned 12 months, we put her on a prong collar and she's never been able to come off it. She's run the pack with an iron fist, is the "nanny" to all creatures small and young and we have been fighting a weight issue since she was 2. We went on raw feeding 18 months ago, primarily to try and get her weight down.
Now, for the results, without the blood and urine screen yet.
Eyes totally healthy, the eyes of a much younger dog. Reflexes excellent, reflexes of a much younger dog. Heart and respiration excellent. She has a small tumor on one eyelid, a small cyst on her back (that's been there 7 years) and an exposed root in one tooth. And... drum roll.... her weight is 77 lbs!!!!!
Our next course of action is surgery for the tooth and a spay. She has regular, normal cycles, and appears to have very good uterine health, but why wait for a case of pyo? We're also going to put her on prozac to decrease some of the fight drive. Since I ONLY let her share the yard with much younger pups who won't challenge the pack order, the Prozac won't affect anything but the fence running and barking every time she sees me working with another adult female.
I'm thrilled to death with the results so far and anxiously waiting for the urine and blood screening. Of course, diabetes, kidney disease and cancer are my biggest fears but on the surface, everything looks great!
