Our GSD pup is almost ten weeks old and one ear is starting to stand. It faces front while the other is facing out to the side. I included two photos. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

I *think* it is normal. Angus' ears did all sorts of floppy things until they finally came up.

Hi Eric Your puppy has perfect ears . That is one of the many ways 10 week old puppy's ears should look like. If you are worried about your puppy's ears being erect don't panic. Puppies ears really start to go up and down at anytime between 12 - 20 weeks of age. Once teething is over then you should worry. To help your puppy's ears lots of chewing helps. < big meaty bones>. Some people like to add a calcium suppliment. Some people believe that you should not touch a puppy's ears. I feel that this is an old wives tale I personally still clean puppy's ears every day and handle them when I am grooming puppy same as I handle feet, ask puppy to show teeth <including for cleaning> etc. I hope that ressures you that your puppy is fine. All the best to you and your new puppy. Regards Freundhund

Ears start coming up from the bases. Those bases look fine. As soon as the pup starts teething, strong ears will turn floppy. You're due for a roller coaster of ears. To help your puppy's ears lots of chewing helps. < big meaty bones>. Some people like to add a calcium suppliment. When we fed kibble, we would add some yoghurt and/or cottage cheese to the ration. But if you're going to supplement calcium, it appears to be a good thing to supplement with Vitamin C alse. It seems to help prevent joint problems from too much Ca. Now that we feed BARF, they get their calcium in the form of bones. And, as you pointed out, the chewing helps exercise the muscles that hold up the ears.

My pup was 5 weeks old when her ears were standing. Is that OK if they stand up pretty early in life? This is my first GSD and I am learning so much from all of you.

It's definitely OK to have the ears standing that early! It just means the pup probably had smaller, strong ears. I notice that the working lines tend to have smaller ears that are up very early. By the way Eric, your pup is just precious!

I agree with Stef about the ears. Just don't be surprised if they go back down during the teething stage. Ears will do all sorts of crazy things!
