Hi everyone! I just got an 8 week old puppy and she is biting the crap out of me! After she takes a nap and then goes outside to the bathroom, she is very excited and she bites me on my hands and ankles. I have read discussions on other boards that say divert the biting, but it isn't easy. I keep lots of toys around and try but she keeps going for my hands. I don't keep my hands around her, but she will come looking for them. I was told not to discourage biting as it may hurt for future Schutzund training. What do I do?

Schutzhund training has got nothing to do with biting your hands. However, still, all you can do, is walk away from her every time she bites. Don't try to stop her by pushing her or something. Just scream in a high pitched voice, get up and walk away. Don't pay any attention to her for a couple of minutes. She'll eventually get the message that biting gets her nowhere. As for Schutzhund: Play a lot with her using toys. Not only balls, there are baby "beißwurst" (English, someone?), leather cloths, ropes etc. Just be very very careful now until her teeth are not there, don't let her pull. Everytime she makes an attempt to pull, let her win.

Another thing to add, is that behavior is very normal. Puppies constantly bite other dogs paws, when they want to play... (ask my older female ) How my girl deals with it is: gives him a short and fierce bite in the muzzle and walks away... ;D

baby "beißwurst" (English, someone?) Bite sausage? It sounds like one of those little, cylindrical bite toys, like a miniature tug.
