I am new at this site. I would like to train my 10 week old GSD in German commands. I only know the "Sitz" word. Is a list or can someone give me any suggestions where I can find the commands.

This is Jon's wife...Try this web link: www.kolendakennels.com/german_cmds.htmit's on our breeder's website. I hope that helps as well. (Side note...I have really enjoyed this board! I spent well over an hour the other night reading and surfing on here....thanks for all the info.) Have a great day! Emily

I tried to train Angus in German but whenever I would have to belt out a command really fast the English version would come out, so I just stuck with English. ;D Now his trainer will be working him and using German commands....oh well.

Thanks so much for the information everyone. This was exactly what I needed to know. The breeder wants me to train my pup in German commands. At first I wasn't sure if that was what I wanted. Does most people train in German commands and is there really a need for this or is it the preference of the owner?

Some of them are not correct unfortunately. I had corrected them (the Kolenda's) on a couple of them, but they apparently didn't choose to change them. Oh well. :- ) Their german aside, thier dogs are outstanding. ;- ) My wife and I have chosen to train in a combination of English and German (am meistens auf Deutsch), and I have found that a lot of the English words we were using (for convenience sake) I end up overusing because they come out of my mouth too often in the wrong contexts, which sort of muddies their meaning. So some of them we are changing over to German. Schaeferhund, what do you use for your release word? We have been using "ok!" But I find myself inadvertently releasing Elsa because I too often us the word "ok" before telling her to do something. (Perhaps similar to the way Germans sometimes use the word "Also," sometimes at the start of a sentence)

If you are going to trial your dog or have your dog trained in Germany, you need the German commands anyway. All of my dogs are bilingual. Even the companion dogs know to hit the deck when they hear the platz command! And the German dogs have picked up very quickly on the English. Not to mention the universal Pfui! JanisN

"Schaeferhund, what do you use for your release word? We have been using "ok!" " I say "frei". "ok" I don't like, personally

... And it really get's the kids' attention when you yell "Pfui!" at them. Now If I could only get them to do a down-stay.
Kids! Platz! Bleiiiiiib.

Here is a site that verbalizes the commands for you. It really helped me when I was trying to get comfortable using the German. It also gives you the option to hear them in other languages. Just click on each word that you would like spoken. Don't forget to turn up your volume! www.uwsp.edu/psych/dog/languag1.htm
