I had trouble getting Bismarch to sit close in front of me during recalls or for just the sit. He always backed away a few steps when I tried to get him closer. My new trainer worked with us to get a nice close sit with him looking up at me. Bismarch knew the watch and touch commands. We first started out with the watch command. I put him in a sit and stepped in closer to him holding tight onto his leash to keep him in place. He of course tried to back away and wouldn't look up. I gave him the watch command while doing this and when he looked up, my trainer clicked and I dropped the hotdog bit that was between my teeth. We did this several times until he didn't attempt to back away. We then moved on to his recall sit. Holding onto his leash, I'd move backwards a couple of steps saying "here" and when I stopped I had my hand positioned against my stomach just above where his head was and I gave him the command "touch" as he was sitting. He'd touch my hand as he was sitting which automatically had his head up looking towards me. The trainer would click and again, I'd release the hotdog treat from between my teeth. After doing this several times and seeing that he had a nice close sit on the recall with focus, we moved on to "fine tune" the sit so it was nice and straight. I work with a 4 ft leash and a leash tab. We put the leash tab on his flat collar and the 4 ft leash on his prong collar. I had a leash in each hand. As I ran backwards saying here, I would "steer" Bismarch into the correct position using the leashes. This put him nice and straight in front of me and I was able to get him even closer on his sits. This also got him use to me not having a hand against my tummy for the close recall sits. Once he was in the correct sit position and straight, she would click and I'd release the hotdog bit.
This way of training worked for Bismarch. I no longer have to give the touch or watch command and on the recall, I can now keep my hands down by the side of my legs.
I'm not to good at writing explanations, so I hope the above is clear enough to understand.
