Hello
I just had a question about dogs in schutxhund. For example does a young pup around 4 months old hAVe to be a totally confident dog to be able to work in schutzhund? Actually a better question would be is ARE ther schutzhund 3 dogs out that that actually had a few insecurities as puppyies and werent always confidant?

All dogs have a few insecurities. Well, most of them, anyway. How are your dog's drives? Does it respond well to a ball or other toys? Does the dog respond to prey stimulii? If so, then you have a lot of tools to work with.
The worst thing a dog can be is probably flat. If you can't stimulate a dog, if it is dead from the neck up, there's little you can do in terms of serious training.
At four months, it's not too early to show the dog to a few trainers and see what they think. But he won't be ready to start serious training, as opposed to a bit of play bitework, for a critical few months. Don't give up too soon.

Puppies should have a few insecurities,,but the quesiton is HOW MUCH??? Thats why we socialize the hell out of puppies,,,to expose them to everything and anything. ALSO,,,we do this to protect them as well. Some puppies are either pushed too far, or not exposed enough. the 8-16week period is the "imprinting" time, when the puppy determines what the world "is". Example,,,when the puppy bites another dog,,he gets bitten back,,,or when he jumps off a table,,he falls down hard. All of these "Newtons laws" as I like to call them, are learned at this crucial period. So ,,AFTER this time, if the pup hasnt been exposed to enough stimuli, he may have some insecurities that he shouldnt. But, I guess I would need to hear more about it. Does the pup shy away from people??? Animals? Caution is fine, followed by "giving a stranger a chance" And allowing them some friendly pats. If you elaboarte more,, ill be glad to help.

Hello Thanks for the replyies everyone! well the thing is my puppy doesnt ever shy away from people. Just around some strange objects once in a blue moon. Like he has seen a MILLION carboard boxes. THEN all of a sudden we are going on a walk and he sees a carboard box one day and starts barking at it and shying away! but then the next time he runs into one hes tottally fine! maybe its just a fear stage? He hasnt done anything silly like that in a while. I was just wondering ALSO my puppy does not bark at people at all! The only thing he barks at are cats NEver people! what age will he start barking at people? JUST RIGHT NOw hes crazy in love with every person he sees! HE gets more excited seeing strangers then he does me

Why would you want him to start barking at people? You mean out of the car or from behind the fence or what? why? because part of being a dog is to bark at people isn't it? Yes i mean while in the car or threw the fence it would just be nice i guess i like barking dogs and not quiet ones.

Yes i mean while in the car or threw the fence it would just be nice i guess i like barking dogs and not quiet ones. I would be greatly annoyed by my dogs barking at people all the time. I want them to bark at suspicious sounds and weird moving people (sneaking etc) ... BUt imagine them going off at every person passing the fence Oh no, that would be nightmare. But anyway, give them time... When they mature they get territorial and start barking...

Sorry but I am totally HORRIFIED at you wanting your dog to bark.
A dog that barks like you are describing is a dog totally out of control for me. He should only bark at suspicious sounds or when you tell him.
Lack of controlled barking is what helps to create a bad name in German Shepherds. I find more people are nervous of my dogs because they do what they are told when. Nothing more intimating to a person than the dog just silently watching them.
That is my opinion.

Sorry Tiger
The way you expressed your wanting your dog to bark did concern me.
When you said through the fence I became concerned as this is the quickest way to alienate the neighbors. People also tend to complain about aggressive dogs in cars.
It is the consequences of the barking to both you and the dog if complaints are made. It is also the fact that it doesn't enhance the good name of our breed when people see this behaviour.

First, there are plenty of Schutzhund3 dogs that are show insecurity...being Sch3 has nothing to do with it!
Second, there must be a reason for a dog to bark! And as someone else stated...be careful what you wish for!

Tiger, yes that fear stage is very typical for pups that age. But it's just part of the learning process and a stage they must go through. As long as your dog isn't showing any timidness towards strangers, I wouldn't worry about whether he barks at this point. Does he move forward, eager to meet them? Or does he back up and act a little shy? Those are clues as to what you may have in the future.
