or should I say, bitework. I have heard from a few people that eventually Germany wil not be doing bitework and then of course, I guess North America would follow suit. Has anyone else heard this?

I am in Germany, but I never heard a rumour like that. Hopefully I will never hear it either

Hey Dana, no rumors like that at the moment. Three years ago, in summer 2000, when that Pitbull killed a six-year-old there was a lot of discussion and rumors and a lot of people were afraid that the protection-part would no longer be allowed. But it didn't come true, thanks God, part of it because of a report from a well-know cynologist stating that the 'protection'-work we are doing doesn't make a dog dangerous.

the 'protection'-work we are doing doesn't make a dog dangerous. I don't think it does, either. Every dog knows how to bite. Protection trains, among other things, restraint, control, and when not to bite.

I agree 100% with Dennis...If anything, Schutzund has been a way for us to try and teach our dogs to control their emotions and to be thinkers. The problem in America is that headlines take precedence over the actual facts. If you look at reports of dog bites, the majority come from unsocialized, UNTRAINED dogs who's owners don't take the responsibility and address dogs that have problems and get them help. I'm sure we've all been to training and seen a dog come in and be completely afraid of it's own shadow, and through patience and training become a confident and well mannered dog.

I don't understand why bitework would be ruled out, because Schutzhund bitework is basically just a rough game of tug in the dog's mind. We're not working with our dog's defense drives to get them to bite. Schutzhund does not compare to personal protection, or the way service dogs are trained.
