I am just starting tracking with Chad and was wondering if anyone had any advice or tips for starting off? I have only done a small bit of tracking before, not with Chad though. I am a member of a local Schutzhund club and have being given some help in this area but I am always interested in other peoples experience too. Thanks in advance

I use food I find tracking very easy to teach in the beginning, especially using food. I don't even know what the special "tips" might be. Don't feed the dog for at öeast 10 hours before tracking for example But I'm sure you know that. Start with 20 steps, putting food in every step, slowly increasing the number of steps, when you get to 50, start leaving out steps (foodwise) Food in 5 no food in 3, next time food in 5, no food in 5, 2 weeks later, food in 5 no food in 10 and so on. If your dog is getting too fast and not meticulous enough, do a track with food in every step again. I dont put any food before the angle, dont drag your feet in the angle because the smell pattern changes if you do. Just do very short steps. Some people like starting with short steps before the angle, I don't like that. I walk normal right to the turn, and then use short steps for 2 meters or so, the intense smell of it, shows the dogs where the angle is. After 2 -3 meters there is food. what else??

Also keep in mind,,depending on the age of the dog (I'll assume he is a puppy),,, try to keep yor tracks in short grass, and dry. Do not teach a pup on wet surface to track. That should come later. And you can progress into taller grass as he progresses.
