Tomorrow I'll be picking up my BARF order, 60 lbs of necks in 2 30lb blocks, frozen solid.
Any tips on how to defrost them enough so that I can get them broken down into smaller packages? I try something different every month, and nothing has worked too well. I end up with aching hands and wrists for days afterwards.
Thanks!

Andi, if you can, double plastic bag the wings out of the box and then dump them in a bathtub of cool water. It's gross but it works! Might take about 12 hours to get them to breaking up stage, keep checking. And break up around the edges first.

Another idea is have the butcher take the 2 blocks to the band saw and cut them into chunks for you. This is what my guy will do if everything is frozen.. I get backs in 40 pound box..and he chunks them for me.. then you just have to pull the number of chunks you want daily.

Well, we ended up taking a pic axe to the blocks to break them into chunks, then putting the chunks in a plastic tub and running water over them so that I could break off baggable pieces. The things I do for these dogs!

Hi - I just defrosted another box of turkey necks last week. I just set it on the counter in the kitchen and expose the necks at room temperature for a few hours. Then I get out the hammer and chisel and have them all separated within about 10 minutes.
Once they have been broken apart I simply put them back in the box. Since they are still frozen, for the most part, I don't have any problems with them freezing together.
Works for me! ;D

I wish I had the freezer space to store it in the delivery boxes. Unfortunately, I have to break it up into smaller segments. Just bought my own small-size pick axe at Home Depot, which should make it easier next time. ;D
