Anyone else notice that the price of chicken wings has gone up lately? I just placed an order for a 40# box, and my wholesaler called me back to say that bulk wings are up to $1.00/pound now! (maybe due to the holidays and wings being a popular appetizer?) I happened to check out the retail price at the grocery store last night... OVER $2.00/pound!! YIKES! time to start feeding more backs and wings I guess.

I agree with you, Liz. I have ordered in chicken necks from my grocer at .49 a pound for a 20# box and that is reasonable, I think. Also, they frequently have the leg/thigh portions on sale at less than $1 per pound and they have more meat on them.
I have lots of buffalo and venison in the freezer from hunting season, so I am lucky! If you know any hunters, tell them that you are looking for meat for your dogs. They often have extra and are trying to get rid of last years meat since this years is on it's way from the processor.

I bought wings at Sam's club today for the puppies, $1.04 a lb. My butcher can't get them for less than $1.29 a pound right now. But the good news is the leg quarters are about .49 a pound. We're feeding backs, necks and quarters to the big dogs.

Liz, the So Cal BARF Co-op is still offering wings under a $1 a lb. I've been feeding necks which are under 40 cents a pound.

Try Australian Prices for Chicken wings $AUD2.49 a kilo. quote] That's a great price! lesee... 2.2 lbs to the kg, roughly $1.10 a pound... then the Aust/USD exchange rate is about .70, that works out to about 75 US cents a lb. Sounds good to me! JanisN

That makes sense, Liz! I know our local meat plant where I get all my dog meat has had a sudden increase in chicken prices and they guaranteed it'll dip again after the 1st of the year, but I had no clue why... It makes total sense!

well, since I had already ordered the wings, I went ahead & bought them. I did find out that turkey necks are way down right now because of the recent US Thanksgiving holiday - so I ordered those and backs too last week. I was told to expect turkey neck prices to go up right around Christmas, though, as whole turkeys are a popular holiday meal in Mexico (my distributor has clients in Mexico too). Prices to drop again after the holidays.
Andi - I should check into that CO-OP. Do you have more info?

Also it is ok to give your dog a whole chicken? I attempted to give my dog a whole chicken but was worried about the bones.

I don't think I would feel safe feeding a whole chicken, those rib bones could be a bit tricky. However, I have fed whole rabbit, and our puppies were given a rabbit by the dam when they were only 4 and a half weeks old. (They got stuck in like a bunch of piranhas, and were weaned off mum almost overnight!)
So if rabbit is ok then maybe whole chicken is too?

all parts of the raw chicken are okay to feed your dog! I have purchased whole chickens before, and then quartered them to feed to my dog over a few days. I have also fed my dog whole "cornish hens" (which I think are just very young chickens) - I split them in half to make two meals. The organs are edible too, of course. Those little rib bones are small, but as long as the bones are raw - the dogs can digest them. I feed back portions to my dog, which contain the ribs, and he never has a problem!

Liz, just noticed your question, duh!! Sorry. The website is www.socalbarf.com. Incredible selection of stuff (whole ground rabbit, anyone?), and really reasonable prices. They deliver once a month and they have delivery points all over So Cal. The only problem I've had is remembering to order in time each month (misssed it this month, yikes!).
