I also feed raw.. My bitch whelped a week ago tomorrow. She eats many meals a day.. inbetween her solid meals I feed her a milk mix of goat's milk, cottage cheese, yogurt, eggs.. I add Vit C, E and B to 2 of her meals a day.. along with Kelp and Raspberry leaves. She looks terrific at the moment.. but she usually does loose alot of coat once the pups are gone.. it comes back gorgeous in about a month. For her solid meals.. she gets 2 meals of chickenbacks.. and 2 meals of a meat/vege/cott.cheese/egg/vitamins.
The pups will stay with mom for a long time.. I start throwing in chicken wings for them to play with at about 3 weeks.. around 4 weeks they really get into them..eating and pulling and crunching. But mom will stay with them up until they leave.. I don't always leave her closed in with them all night once they are 6 plus weeks.. but she has many play dates with them daily. It is a blast to watch the mom and the older pups play.. and she teaches them so much.

We let the pups and Mom decide when to wean - they start checking out Mom's food and as they are ready, they start eating. We will remove Mom to an adjoining run for a few hours a day when she wants it but they get to interact with their kids pretty much as long as they want. The pups also get to interact with other adults and they get to learn proper pack behavior. We don't let them leave until about 10 weeks as we feel they learn a lot during those last couple of weeks. Besides, I love watching them all explore the property, going on nature walks and investigating the whole wide world.

Yes I know Canidae gets rave reviews. But bought a few bags and most was hard to get them to maintain the weight. Never heard of Blackwood have to look into that. Funny whizzie you said Nutro I was talking to a friend yesterday and we both use to feed Nutro and had no problems for the life of us neither of us knew why we switched dog foods. Coats always seemed good on it. There is just so MANY foods and never know what is right ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.... If barf wouldn't be to expensive in my area to feed I probaly would. But no cheap place to get meat and for 10 would be a disaster. Lauren I tried Diamond preium and the preformance (Purple and black bag) also the hi-energy. To me that stuff was CRAP coats where dull and rough feeling. And stools argh light brown cow patties. Stayed with it for 6 months nope will not convince me to go back. Have a friend who still feeds it and for some reason loves it but all his dogs do not have that luster to thier coats either. Any thoughts on that Royal Canin? Looked at the Cal Natural and only 3 stores in Tampa carry it 2 are way to far will check out other one today and see it. What are your thoughts on it Lauren and how long have you been feeding it? No better references than hearing from people who use it and love the results ;D I just recently Swtiched Elsa To Timberwolf Organics and it is working well. Very high percentage of real meat! This is the best food I have found. I have not found any nutrional holes like i had found with many other good brands like Nutro and natural balance. (and those are good brands, just not Best) It seems to have everything they need, and a wide variety of meat choices. I am very impressed with their philosophy and the Info on their website is good. They also were on Whole Dog Journal's Top Dog food list last year (i haven't seen this your) Website: www.timberwolforganics.com/Just my 2 cents, from someone who has been researching dog food compulsively for 6 months.

Why so much Vit E? (2000 IU) That is a LOT!!!! Heck, in Multi Vits for people, there is only 45 IU and that is 150% of the "recommended daily value". Besides the benefits of Vit E. there is also the fact that is acts as a blood thinner. I would be worried about giving that much if there was an accident/injury of some sort.

Most of the nutritionist i know, and I am close with several, are quick to point out that the "recommended Daily Values" are woefully inadequate for people. Really, for humans 400 IU is a more correct baseline. So do not look at 2000 IU for dogs as being too outrageous, especially in regard to it being for a two week period. You are comparing them to an outdated, inaccurate scale and macro dosing (at least in humans) is not an unheard of thing. That being said, I cannot tell you about dogs. THey are similar but different. Jon

So if 400 IU is what is called for for a person. 2000 IU isn't a little much for a dog that weighs less than half as much as a small person?
Besides, seems to me like if it is only going to be for 2 weeks, chances are that it isn't going to do much, if any, good anyway. That isn't enough time to even see a difference.
While it most likely won't hurt anything, seems like a giant waste of time to me.

At 1st I to thought 2000 IU's was insane. She told me she did it for 2 weeks and made a tremendous difference Hexe is as out of coat as Oxie (her bitch was) was. I asked the vet and she said it may help as long as do not prolong (keeping on for Months) but for me to stop worring coats go out after litters and not unusal that she is not in the least concerned by this (she is a breeding specilists and knows her S#@*. Figured will see what it does than continue with just her on this new stuff I ordered. Please welcome the opinions on this subject maybe we all can learn from this. ;D

After getting desperate on her coat and it not coming back, yes I give 2000 IU's of Vit E for approx 2 wks then stop.
From the Breeders Education Committee Website:
Vitamin E:
Vitamin E is an important nutrient which has been shown to have a number of physiologic and pharmacologic effects. It in a potent antioxidant and reduces fat oxidation and increases the production of HDL cholesterol. At higher doses, it also reduces cyclooxygenase and lipooxygenase activities, decreasing production of prostaglandins and leukotreines. As such, it is a potent anti-inflammatory drug. It will reduce platelet function and prolong the bleeding time slightly in healthy individuals. There is no known side-effects to vitamin E at levels less than 4000-6000 IU per day.
2 wks is usually all it takes. I went from a baldy to females with thick full coats, skin in better condition. So I'll continue to do what works for me, JMO.

Have you tried IAMS.I have been feeding it for about 3 months now.Coats are shiny and full, stools are normal. The only problem I have had was weight gain,so I just cut back from what they were eating a 1/4 cup and they are fine.,then again I have one female that I could not keep weight on and she is finally looking good. While she was pregnant I only supplemented with two cans of canned meat per day,she did blow her coat after delivery of her first litter, but finally after 8 weeks, she looks great.Better then before in my opinion.
